(Filed Under wholesale Activewear News). Hanesbrands, Inc. has ordered approximately 10,000 Ibs of Crailar Organic Fiber from Canadian textiles producer Naturally Advanced Technologies, which will be delivered during the first quarter of this year. As announced in September 2009, and reported in the October issue of BODY, the two companies have entered into a joint agreement to produce 100 percent organic innerwear made from the Crailar fiber under the Hanes label. This is through license awarded to them by the National Research Council of Canada, which owns the Crailar fiber.

“The first purchase order supplies Crailar fiber in a full-scale trial using our proposed manufacturing equipment supplier in Germany in January 2010,” Ken Barker, chief executive officer of Naturally Advanced Technologies, said in a statement. “Thereafter we will conduct another full scale blending trial on commercial scale spinning equipment at a Hanesbrand facility […] the next phase in product development is to conduct consumer testing. With positive results from these tests, we will begin finalizing commercialization plans to bring Crailar products to market.”

In other news, Champion Athleticwear, a brand owned by Hanesbrands, Inc, will once again conduct a test of its apparel on approximately half of the athletes participating in the 17th annual Disney Marathon Weekend, which will take place from January 7th through 10th at Disney World in Orlando, Fl. Champion calls this test its Innovation Lab.

“True to the Champion brand, we are able to develop great performance apparel by getting real feedback from everyday athletes who participate in our Innovation Lab,” Claire Powell, director of marketing for Champion, said. “We are excited to bring the program back to the Disney Marathon weekend for a third year to see how the athletes have responded to our products.”

Champion gave those participating in the lab its performance apparel in September 2009, and asked them to catalogue their experience with it in a training log. Runners will also wear Champion Apparel during Disney’s World Marathon weekend events.
