(Filed Under Fashion News). As retailers like Gap Inc., American Eagle and Iconix expand internationally, Macy’s Inc. is focusing on the web.
After disclosing plans last month to build an e-commerce fulfillment center in West Virginia, on Tuesday the owner of the Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s chains announced that it will add approximately 725 new positions over the next two years to support both divisions growing e-commerce operations. In total, the company expects to add close to 3,500 full-time, part-time and seasonal holiday associates in relation to the growth of its online business.
“Macy’s Inc. is building one of the largest, most efficient and resourceful e-commerce organizations in American retailing as part of our comprehensive omnichannel strategy,” said Terry Lundgren, chairman, president and C.E.O of Macy’s Inc. said. “This is a business that that thrives on unrelenting creativity and innovation. Having the right talent in the right place is vital as we seek to sustain and accelerate our sales growth online, as well as in stores. These expansions […] Represent investments in merchandising, marketing and site development, which complement ongoing improvements in systems infrastructure, fulfillment capacity and customer service.”
In New York City, the company plans to add about 260 Macys.com positions, and has signed a lease for additional office space at 1440 Broadway in Midtown Manhattan. For Bloomingdales.com, it plans to add about 115 positions, and is negotiating a lease for additional office space. Macy’s Inc. currently employs approximately 420 Macy.com associates and 200 Bloomingdales.com associates in New York City.
In San Francisco, Macys.com has expanded its office space at 685 Market St. and will add about 200 positions. This office currently employs over 300 Macys.com associates.
Macy’s Systems & Technology (MST) organization, which supports Macy’s Inc.’s e-commerce technology platform, expects to add about 150 positions at its central campus in suburban Atlanta, which would bring its workforce to over 1,200 employees. The company is currently expanding within a building it occupies part of.
Macy’s Inc. will list these positions on MacysJobs.com by the end of this month. The company currently operates 850 department stores in 45 states, D.C., Guam and Puerto Rico. Its fiscal 2009 sales totaled $23.5 billion.
