(Filed Under Financial and General Interest News). After years of protests from Saudi women, King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud decreed that women would be allowed to work in intimate apparel stores and that men would be banned from lingerie sales in Saudi Arabia.
For the past three years, Saudi women had been prohibited from working in intimate apparel shops. Additional Saudi laws prohibit women from interacting with men unrelated to them, which made lingerie shopping an embarrassing venture.
The king’s decree was in response to protests and boycotts from Saudi women, as well as part of a push to reduce female unemployment in the country, estimated to be at 30 percent. King Abdullah has also ordered the creation of 70,000 new job opportunities for Saudi women.
