Charming Shoppes, Inc., a company operating women’s apparel, intimate apparel and plus-size retail chains, reported second-quarter consolidated net sales of $499.2 million, down 3.5 percent compared with $517.6 million for the comparable period in 2010.
Gross profit came to $245.9 million, down from $249.1 million in the second quarter of 2010, the result of operating fewer stores compared to the year-ago period. Gross margin rose from 48.1 percent to 49.3 percent.
The company cited a 17 percent jump in e-commerce sales, led by a 20 percent increase at lanebryant.com and a 23 percent increase at catherines.com — however, the surge in e-commerce revenue only amounted to $36 million.
Bensalem, Penn.-based Charming Shoppes currently operates 1,953 retail stores in 48 states under the names Lane Bryant, Lane Bryant Outlet, Cacique, Fashion Bug, Fashion Bug Plus and Catherines Plus Sizes.
