(Filed Under wholesale Costume News). Rubie’s Costume Company Inc. is creating licensed costumes, accessories, make up and masks based on the new movie, Oz the Great and Powerful. The film opened in U.S. theaters on March 8 and, as of the week of March 18, Disney boasted on the film’s web site that it was the “#1 one movie the the world, two weeks in a row.”
Inspired by L. Frank Baum’s 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, this new film includes, as described by Rubie’s, “unique characters that come to life with distinctive ensembles reminiscent of their big screen roles." Rubie’s is creating the Oz the Great and Powerful costume collection in teen and adult sizes, and it will contain costume elements representing charaters including Oscar Diggs, Glinda, Theodora, Evanora, China Doll and Finley, a flying monkey. “From Glinda’s ethereal dress, to Oscar Diggs’s signature top hat and bow-tie, each costume incorporates individual elements from the film,” explained a Rubie’s release.
“Oz the Great and Powerful is a visual masterpiece with strong identifiable characters.” said Howard Beige, Rubie’s executive vice president. “Having the opportunity to develop costumes based on these new characters was a chance to keep the spirit of the film alive well through Halloween season and beyond.”
The Oz the Great and Powerful costume collection will be available on-line and in stores for Halloween 2013.
The new film, directed by Sam Raimi, “imagines the origins of L. Frank Baum’s beloved wizard character,” according to Rubie’s. “When Oscar Diggs (James Franco), a small-time circus magician with dubious ethics, is hurled away from dusty Kansas to the vibrant Land of Oz, he thinks he’s hit the jackpot—fame and fortune are his for the taking—that is until he meets three witches, Theodora (Mila Kunis), Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Glinda (Michelle Williams), who are not convinced he is the great wizard everyone’s been expecting. Reluctantly drawn into the epic problems facing the Land of Oz and its inhabitants, Oscar must find out who is good and who is evil before it is too late. Putting his magical arts to use through illusion, ingenuity—and even a bit of wizardry—Oscar transforms himself not only into the great wizard but into a better man as well.”
Rubie’s claims it is “the world’s largest manufacturer of Halloween costumes and accessories” and “specializes in the creation, design, manufacturing, and distribution of costumes, make-up, wigs, masks, hats, prosthetics, and accessory items.” According to the firm, it’s “products are distributed wherever Halloween and masquerade costumes are retailed, including national retail chains, toy stores, costume shops, variety stores, party stores, and other specialty retailers located throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, Europe, Latin and South America, Australia, and Asia.
