(Filed Under wholesale Lingerie News). Jannie Whitt of JW International, a firm the produces intimates under several brand names including Innocent Angel, told BODY that “Plus size, is extremely important to our business.”
Her interview is part of our survey on the role of larger sizes in today’s intimates market. Individual segments will appear on the BODY web site, then be collected and published shortly in the print edition.
“Since I started my company more than twenty years ago, we have had to adjust our sizes in order to make sure our merchandise fits our customers properly,” said Whitt, agreeing with the statistics that say women are getting bigger. “We want to make sure that we have a presence in every avenue of the intimate apparel industry. The plus size industry continues to grow and we want to be a part of it. The feedback from customers from across the United States has been: “Please add more plus sizes.””
Because her intimates are made of “100% cotton” it is “perfect for the plus size market,” continued Whitt. “We have had several plus size retailers approach us about creating a cotton collection for their stores.” JW International has not yet created a dedicated plus catalog but “This is something we will be adding in the future,” she said, noting also that “We will be creating a new brand name for (the) plus size collection soon.” And, “Once we complete our new plus size collection, there will be an increase in the marketing for our plus sizes collections. Of course, plus size models will be used for our plus size collection ads, catalogs and marketing. Because all sizes are beautiful.”
With the new collection, “My plans are to make plus sizes more fashionable. By creating the same styles for plus sizes as I do for our regular collections. Just because you are a plus size, it doesn’t mean that your fashions have to look like a bedspread with big flowers. Plus sizes should also be comfortable, sexy and alluring.”
Like many wholesalers, Whitt has been encouraged by stores to increase her plus offerings. “The feedback that I have received from many retailers and sales representatives is that there is a void in the market for plus sizes especially in intimate apparel. The plus size women should not be the forgotten woman.”
Whitt believes that her company is especially well suited to address the needs of larger women. “We specialize in 100% cotton intimate apparel which is perfect for the plus size market. Cotton is more comfortable than other fibers. Plus, cotton allows the body to breathe. Cotton is just much more comfortable regardless of the size.”
“The plus sizes market will play a major part in our business. Our collection will offer something to the plus sizes market that hasn’t been offered before and we plan on capitalizing on it.”
