(Filed Under wholesale Lingerie News). Ohio’s nine-location Discount Fashion Warehouse reported that in the first five days since it reopened (following the closure mandated by the state due to the pandemic), sales have been running 62% ahead of the same period last year on a sales per hour basis.
In an article last week, co-owner Jeff Bradshaw told us that on his first day back, Tuesday, May 12, “Our sales were big, much better than expected, for sure. And our comps were better than last year.”
In a follow up report, Bradshaw revealed that total sales for all stores for the first five days open were up 7.8% over the same five days last year, despite the fact that the number of hours each store was open decreased from 12 to just eight per day.
The number of “open hours are not mandated, but staffing levels were not at full capacity so we condensed down to a manageable one shift,” he explained.
Bradshaw, who owns the discount outlets with partner Mark Laufersweiler, added that the total dollars per transaction rose 48% over the five days. Discount Fashion Warehouse, offers a variety of apparel, including a significant amount of intimate apparel.
Despite the strong results so far, the retailer said he does not plan to get “too far ahead of ourselves, nor overly excited. Clearly there’s the initial enthusiasm with the new found “freedom” of shopping, but as with any retailer, it’s the entire year that counts. Both staff and customers are excited to be back at the off price treasure hunt!”
Bradshaw’s results, along with other similar reports from around the country, stand in clear opposition to those who have predicted that shoppers will be very slow to return to stores.
“In past periods of downturns or uncertainty the discount sector has performed better than other sectors,” Bradshaw concluded. “We may have a slight advantage if the consumer is cautious with their funds or a bit fearful of possible future impacts of Covid 19.” — NM
