(Filed Under Fashion News). On April 27th, fashion fans flocked to the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York City for a dose of this generation’s pool of design talent at “FIT on the Catwalk: Fashion Design Senior Collection 2009.”
Funded in part this year by the Importer Support program and Cotton Incorporated, the professional runway show took place at 4:30 and 7:30pm, with a reception and awards presentation from 6 to 7pm.
The show featured “the most creative designs” by graduating FIT fashion design students in the intimate apparel, sportswear, special occasion, knitwear, children’s wear, and, for the first time, menswear categories for the upcoming fall season.
Notable attendees included Patricia Field, Karen Sabag, Roberto Verdi, Zang Toi, Adrienne Landau, Giles Mendel, Judith Ripka and Italo Zucchelli. Additionally, FIT intimate apparel professor Alexandra Armillas and industry critic Deborah Marquit were in attendance.
Of the 113 ensembles shown, 14 were intimate apparel outfits, which included bodysuits, bras and panties, bustiers, petticoats, corsets, robes and nightwear made from materials including chantilly lace, chiffon and silk with embellishments like ruffles, stitching and sequins. Graduating senior Arnaz Bhujwalla won the award for best intimate apparel design for her bustier, panty with lace details and black chiffon robe ensemble.
Founded in 1944, FIT has more than 10,000 part-time and full-time students. Fashion industry greats including Calvin Klein, David Chu, Michael Kors and Nanette Lepore, among others, were once students at the university.
