(Filed Under Financial and General Interest News). Nordstrom Inc. reported net sales of $1.71 billion during the first quarter ended May 2, 2009, a 9.2 percent decrease from sales of $1.88 billion during the same period last year.
Full-line same-store sales declined by 16.5 percent, while Nordstrom Direct sales remained relatively flat. Top-performing merchandise categories were dresses, junior women’s apparel and cosmetics, with the South and Mid-Atlantic as the highest performing regions. Nordstrom Rack “outperformed most of its off-price competitors” with its same store increase of 1.2 percent.
During the first quarter, Nordstrom Inc. relocated and opened three full-line stores in Murray, Utah, Cherry Hill, New Jersey and Peabody, Massachusetts. The company also opened four Nordstrom Rack stores in Paramus, New Jersey, Dallas, Texas, Sandy Park, Utah, and Orland Park, Illinois, and East Palo Alto, California.
Founded in 1901, Nordstrom currently runs 176 stores in 28 states.
