Coquette Reshapes Costumes

(Filed Under wholesale Costume News). Coquette International Inc., a 25-year-old adult lingerie brand based in Ontario, Canada, is coming up with a new way to pass savings on to customers whose pockets may be hurting with the current status of the economy.

Instead of including plastic accessories with the costumes, Coquette is now building the accessories directly into the costumes themselves. "We built things like tails, ears and horns into the costumes more so than in the past, even for the male costumes," said Carrie Russell-Bakker, designer for Coquette.

The fairy costume, for example, now comes with built-in wire and nylon wings. "It gave it a cute cartoonish look, but sexy and fun, and definitely different from our competitors," said Bakker.

Coquette also added "some fun prints to the costumes," Bakker said. "We have a couple's costume: Frankenstein and Zombie Bride. It's lime green with screen-printed skeleton hands, which not only communicates stronger what the costume is, but also stands out in a club."

The men's costumes have also been tweaked a bit. According to Bakker, the male costumes were in need of a fresher look so as to make them more masculine and eye-catching. "We decided to not do bottoms because no guy wants to wear lycra shorts or pants, it's just a waste of money," she said. "We focused on shirts and hoodies that are more fashionable."

Coquette's products are available in over 140 stores in the U.S. and Canada. They are also available at 11 online retailers.
