Peekay Incorporated did not begin as the multi-chain adult concept it is today. Founders Phyllis Heppenstall and her daughter Kris Butt started the company as a home party business in 1981; from there, it grew to include 31 retail stores, an e-commerce website and a wholesale division. The main element of Peekay’s business, however, continues to be its retail operations, consisting of 20 Lovers and seven A Touch of Romance stores throughout Washington State, and four ConRev locations in Southern California.
Sexy apparel makes up a significant portion of the Auburn, Wash.-based company's retail merchandise, with lingerie styles by Leg Avenue, Dreamgirl and Carrie Amber among the most popular. Currently, customers are gravitating toward babydolls, chemises, thigh-highs and boyshorts.
In sexy costumes—a major category for the Halloween season—Dreamgirl, Forplay and Mystery House are the best-selling brands. The company expects quick-change, light-up and vampire costumes to be particularly popular this season.
With the mission statement: "To provide an exciting environment to explore human sexuality and to acknowledge the freedom to do so," Peekay considers itself more than the typical adult store. To maintain this reputation, the company focuses on employee training and providing information to help customers make informed decisions.
Charitable giving and education are two other Peekay hallmarks. For Breast Cancer Awareness month this October, the company is partnering with the Evolved adult toy line. For each toy sold at Peekay stores the company will donate $1 to breast cancer prevention and research.
In November, the company will host its annual Holiday food drive, partnering with local food banks and creating store incentives for staff and customers to give back to their communities by gathering donations.
