According to Todd Seaton, co-owner of Skivvies, a Dallas-based men’s store; “[Price-consciousness] really depends on the person. There are some people who still come in and ask, where’s the sales rack? However, there are also those who don’t care about the cost.”
His advice to someone starting out in the men’s intimates retail market is; “Have lots of money behind you to get started, shop in other men’s stores to see what they are doing, and you need to have a website.”
Seaton and co-owner David Richardson first opened the store in 1995, and started focusing on the men’s intimates after noticing that it was their best-selling category even though it did not make up the majority of merchandise at that time. Today, men’s intimates make up 80 percent of merchandise.
He described the store’s customers as running the gamut of ages and styles; from 18 to 60-years-old, and including famous sports players, women shopping for men and male strippers, to name a few consumer groups. Top-selling brands consist of 2(x)ist, N2N Bodywear, Calvin Klein and Clever, with best-selling sizes S and M. In trends, Seaton said “sheer is very hot right now.”
